Jim graduated from veterinary school at the University of California, Davis, and spent a year as a large animal intern at the Ontario Veterinary College before moving to Columbia, Missouri where he completed an equine surgery residency and PhD training program in physiology. He joined the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia in 1981 as an equine surgeon/researcher. His primary clinical and research interests were in equine gastrointestinal surgery and endotoxemia. He became a Distinguished Research Professor in 2002 and a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2012. He has served as Director of Educational Resources since 2013.
